The benefits of biophilic design can be seen in homes, offices and even schools. This doesn’t mean holding class outside, but biophilic classrooms allow a hands-on approach to explaining human’s relationship with nature to students.

An article from news site Entrepreneurs Break describes biophilic classrooms as follows: hardwood floors, patterns on the wall resembling leaves or tree branches, stone finishes and lots of natural light. While some students may potentially be distracted by different things in a classroom, writer Cicerone Chelmu notes that the benefits are worth it.

Students learning in biophilic classrooms have reduced stress, with the calming environment helping them feel more comfortable.

“With a greater sense of calm and relaxation, it becomes much easier for most people to concentrate and focus on their work,” Chelmu said. “One study found that biophilic design elements resulted in test score gain up to three times higher than in years without such enhancements.”
