The Urban Developer awarded Burwood Brickworks Shopping Center the Excellence in Sustainability title during its yearly awards program. Due to the pandemic, the publication’s third annual ceremony was held digitally.
Burwood Brickworks touts itself as the world’s most sustainable shopping center. While privately developed, the center itself is open to the surrounding community. Urban Developer describes the center as “self-sufficient,” containing “socially equitable, culturally rich and ecologically restorative spaces that connect people to light, air, food and community.”
The biophilic shopping center features 2500 square meters of roof agriculture. Additionally, there are over 270 citrus trees lining the northern side of the property. Power is supplied through solar panels, with ample surplus energy stored away.
