Koto, a UK-based home design studio, recently partnered with California based firm Plant Prefab to build two sustainable, prefabricated homes.

While Koto specializes in modular home design, to ensure the home’s sustainability, they implemented two elements of Scandinavian design: minimalism and biophilia.

“Biophilic design, which could be inherently minimalist, interprets that human tendency for both interior and exterior spaces,” an article for Yanko Design explained. “Producing a design concept used to increase the connectivity between a building’s residents and the natural world.”

Bringing biophilia and the project’s sustainability goals together was accomplished by the minimalism of Scandinavian design; using recycled natural building materials, installing special heating and cooling systems and smart energy monitoring systems. The homes have LED lighting throughout, recycled insulation and drywall for the walls and low-flow water fixtures.
