Biophilia has been predicted to be a popular design trend for 2021, but it seems that its popularity stretches to architects as well. A recent article by Canadian Architect, and industry news site, states that a goal for many this year will be figuring out how to create a functional outdoor space.

The challenge comes as a result of the number of companies with employees working remotely. Having gotten used to the flexibility of working from home, companies want to offer similar flexibility with their workspace. Noting the benefits of biophilia and being in consistent contact with nature, having a functional outdoor space is a popular option.

“Research has shown that in the corporate setting being outdoors is the least expensive place to invest in per square foot – it doesn’t cost a lot compared to the building,” Kirt Mart, vice president of marketing and design for Landscape Forms, explained. “Those spaces tend to be overlooked but are really critical to the human experience and to people.”
