Due to the pandemic and wildfires out west, indoor air quality has become a hot topic for architectural designers and everyday people alike. In a recent article, Design Milk, an online magazine covering modern design, reviews different ways to address your air quality.

One method boasts the air filtration powers of houseplants, yet they aren’t powerful enough to kill any viruses in the air or smoke trails. More artificially, some smart home systems have capabilities that allow them to manage your indoor air quality for you.

The article notes that phthalates and other off-gas toxins can be harmful to immunocompromised individuals or those who are sensitive to certain chemicals.

“A decade or so ago, there was a lot of hype about the radon risk of granite countertops,” Jamie Gold, author of the article, said. “Experts say that the risk is low in this regard, but it’s not when it comes to basement and first-floor living areas, since radon can be found in soil, particularly in some regions of the U.S.”
