Houseplants and gardening have grown in popularity over the last year due to humans seeking comfort through connections to nature. A 2019 Japanese study found that those with plants on their desks showed lower levels of anxiety and stress after four weeks.

“Plants are the perfect gift to help us relax and be happy,” Alfred Palomares, vice president of merchandising for 1-800-Flowers.com, said in an interview with Hudson Valley Style magazine. “For folks looking for a way to connect in 2021, you can’t go wrong with the [Red Maranta] Prayer Plant, deemed our plant of the year. Its leaves fold together at night like praying hands, making it a wonderful reminder to be thankful and calm.”

The Prayer Plant is also easy to care for, adding to its allure as a gift. A regular bouquet of cut flowers are also favorable and provide a splash of color in any space.
