South African civil engineer Dr. Joanna Leach made a guest appearance in a recent episode of the Argenta Wellness podcast. Discussing green initiatives being pushed in pursuit of developing biophilic cities, Leach points out that such cities are entirely “natural,” but rather “heavily engineered spaces.”

Looking at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, where she’s currently a research fellow, she talks about innovative approaches to green infrastructure and implementing biophilic elements. The city of Birmingham already has a great deal of greenery, and the canals connecting different areas increase its accessibility making it pedestrian-friendly.

“The more connected we are with our environment and nature the better,” the episode preview stated. “Imagine a city where we can see nature, smell fresh air, hear bird song.”
