Retail chain SM opened its 75th “supermall” in Butuan City on the Philippian island of Mindanao on Nov. 13. The mall spans just over 48,000 square meters, featuring an “origami-inspired” facade and biophilia-centric design elements.

The mall’s architects boast that the design concepts used in construction “highlight” its interior, with the biophilia-centric theme of the Cyberzone inspired by “nature’s tangible features that mimic plant vegetation’s orientation, the natural pattern of days and season and the earth stone of the environment.

“More than that, it [the supermall] will be a catalyst for employment and business opportunities in the area,” a representative for SM said. The Butuan City location is the retail chain’s 75th supermall and the first in the Caraga Region.
