In his new book, author Timothy Beatley discusses the threat climate change poses to birds and the areas large populations inhabited by them.
A point he makes throughout “In the Bird Friendly City: Creating Safe Urban Habitats,” he states the importance of having elements of nature in cities. Details like grass, trees and, as Beatley notes, birdsong, make cities more hospitable.
Beatley’s own organization, Biophilic Cities, works with different researchers as well as nonprofit and government organizations to develop more “natureful” cities. In an interview for Mongabay, he also notes “that access to nature in cities is not equal.” Systemic racism often pushes minorities to areas of a city that don’t have as much contact with nature; an issue Beatley says urban planners “have a responsibility to rectify.”
“There’s no issue that’s more important and nothing more present on our collective agendas right now than that of diversity and inclusiveness,” he said.
